Tough Fe-based bulk metallic glasses

چکیده
The toughness of Fe-based bulk metallic glasses BMGs has been significantly improved via systematic changes in chemistry. Chemistry changes were selected based on their likely effects on critical elastic constants shown to affect plasticity/toughness in various BMGs, in addition to their recently discovered effects on chemical bonding in these Fe-based systems. The fracture energy obtained on notched toughness samples tested in mode I was correlated with chemistry-induced changes to Poisson’s ratio and the ratio of the elastic shear modulus to the bulk modulus B, as was the strain energy at fracture for smooth cylindrical compression samples that failed under mode II conditions. Fractographic observations correlate well with the observed increases in toughness. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2890489

Structural study of conventional and bulk metallic glasses during annealing
Metallic glasses with conventional glass-forming ability (Al-Fe-Nd, Fe-Zr-B, Fe-B-Nb compositions) and bulk metallic glasses (Ca-Mg-Cu compositions) were studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction during annealing throughout glass transition and crystallization temperatures. The analysis of the first diffraction peak position during the annealing process allowed us to follow the free volume chang...

متن کاملReformation Capability of Short-Range Order and Their Medium-Range Connections Regulates Deformability of Bulk Metallic Glasses
Metallic glasses (MGs) typically have high yield strength while low ductility, and the latter is commonly considered as the Achilles' heel of MGs. Elucidate the mechanism for such low ductility becomes the research focus of this field. With molecular level simulations, we show the degree of short-range order (SRO) of atomic structure for brittle Fe-based glass decreases dramatically during the ...
متن کاملStructure Analyses of Fe-based Metallic Glasses by Electron Diffraction
Nanoscale structural information of amorphous structures has become obtainable by using nanobeam electron diffraction in combination with high resolution imaging. In addition, accurate radial distribution function analysis using energy filter has also become available to know averaged amorphous structures. In this paper, we introduce some applications of these techniques, especially to several ...
متن کاملChemistry (intrinsic) and inclusion (extrinsic) effects on the toughness and Weibull modulus of Fe-based bulk metallic glasses
Systematic changes in composition were employed to increase the notch toughness of a variety of Fe-based Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs). The Fe50Mn10Mo14Cr4C16B6 BMG possessed very high hardness (e.g. 12GPa) but very low notch toughness (e.g. 5.7MPam) at room temperature, consistent with fracture surface observations of brittle features. Many of the other Fe-BMG variants, created to change the Po...
